leon ware s self-titled 1982 album has long been a holy grail for rare groove record collectors. indeed, mint copies are rarely found for less than £100. so be with records, a new vinyl-only reissue label, is pleased to mark its first release with ware s classic â&#128,&#147, a set that features the timeless why i came to california, a beautiful example of early 80s soul funk. a truly unsung legend, leon ware has written a stunning variety of classic soul music over the course of six decades. he joinedmotownin the late 60s and became one of the label s key writers. his most indelible contribution at motown was marvin gaye s masterpiece i want you. ware s production and songwriting memorably took gaye to another creative level. despite recording a handful of critically acclaimed solo albums for motown and elektra, including this one here, he has remained a secret to many outside the music industry. be with records hope this timely reissue goes some way to rectifying that.

number 2 of three kicks off with the menacing sounds of anastasia vtorova’s (machine woman) 8 minute iron curtain, meandyou co founder herron (sam lewis) made on appearance on the first jheri tracks comp and is back with the percussive stop start vibes of yusmita. sias returns to the fold with his brand of post punk techno on brickfields with sbot & soft stone completing the set.

this record is the result of an undeniable desire to uncover a once lost and forgotten gem from beyond the dust. to recover the magic underneath, that has never grown nor subsided and doesn’t belong to anything but itself. a love story between two music labels that found each other in this blissful journey, lossless and something happening somewhere are here to presents the next chapter in their findings. uzoamaka is an original track by king britt from 2002, that still remains as fresh and uplifting as it was 15 years ago. nuno dos santos (sohaso) has been in love with the sonic narrative since it was released, but felt the urge to bring the transformative beauty to a wider audience. in an attempt to recover the original, the original master and pre-master turned out to be lost by the waves of time. calyx mastering have remastered the music straight from vinyl, keeping the raw charm of the original but giving it a sonic facelift to fit with modern standards, also making it available in the digital format for the first time since it’s release. the original by king britt is an ode to the ritual of dance music in it’s purest form. with vocals panning across the stereo field that preach ‘sing, dance, be, free to dance’, it resonates with the primordial human playfulness, joy and expression in all of us. teasing with a melodic bassline, almost reaching twelve minutes running time, it’s a modern hymn that never fails to mesmerize and bring people’s spirit together. besides remastering the original, it gave the opportunity to invite other artists to retell the story. this time the mighty dixon gives the original track an update for modern dance floors. pushing the groove to the foreground, adding some extra percussion and drive while letting the choir guide you to a monumental break in which the chord suspends in the air. “free to… free to… free to…” nuno dos santos has used his magic touch for a short beat edit, which focusses the whole affair on the groove even more. a powerful tool to add some impact to tracks or to break up an otherwise repetitious dj set. mathias schober is back under his sb alias, carefully tightening and shortening the original version from 2002 with his edit to create a version that celebrates the quality of the elements. pushing and pulling, enhancing the entrancing effect of the musical soul.

bringing his signature sound to crosstown rebels, delightfully unconventional producer sis delivers his third release on the label, the blind side. hot on the heels of his boabab album on mobilee, rodriguez jr. delivers a stunning remix on the b-side. the blind side is set to soundtrack the summer, an incredibly infectious track with its exotic and intricate drum workouts and alluring vocal cuts. on the flip, rodriguez jr. brings in deep pads, uplifting melodic keys and a storming piano lines for a whole new take on the original. taking his artistic enthusiasm from his turkish father, sis grew up in berlin surrounded by music. following a series of releases on nick curly’s cecille, ricardo villalobos who loved his track trompeta so much that he released it on his boutique label picked up the german producer sei es drum in 2008. his success of trompeta led to an avalanche of recognition, groove magazine and ‘newcomer of the year’ by raveline mag named him both ‘producer of the year’. in 2011 sis launched his own label cocolino where he released his debut three-part album dejame. olivier mateu aka rodriguez jr. grew up in the south of france and moved to paris as a young adult and soon formed the electro group the youngsters. signed by laurent garnier to f communications, the duo released two albums and a string of successful singles. focusing on a different alias, rodriguez jr. gave olivier the freedom to run with his creativity, which can be seen in his acclaimed live shows.

seth troxler’s agenda setting play it say it label is back with more summer heat, this time from detroit based duo ataxia. hailing from detroit, this pair has recently played the famous movement festival in their home city for the fifth time, work with top labels like nervous records and culprit la and have already impressed with a fine ep on leftroom this year. their sound is designed to get the party started, and after already releasing on this label in 2016 they are now back with three more essential tracks. up first, the terrific ‘time original’ is a fluid and wriggling tech cut with busy synth lines scurrying about over driving drums. it’s dark and freaky with poised chord stabs and the whole thing cannot fail to get floors moving. then comes ‘supertouch’, which is a superbly slick acid number. weird bleeps and clipped vocals add an unhinged edge to the urgent rubbery drums and the whole thing is a mind melting number that will take any set to the next level. last of all is the vital ‘villains’, seven inventive minutes of gurgling bass, alien sound design and wonky synth lines that all warp around each other and melt your mind as they do so. colourful and full of character thanks to a rapped vocal line, this one is a real party anthem in the making. across all three cuts here this talented duo really show off their wide range of studio skills in some style.

sex. sorrow. synthesizers. digital romance are a french duo cast in the mould of vintage electro pop. their sound echoes those halcyon days but is firmly set with an eye on the future. vocals, from marie de berlin, are deep, inviting and rich. tracks tell of lost loves, forlorn figures hoping to find solace in the cold and calculated world we inhabit. sparkling synthwork, care of forgotten illusions, perfectly matches those breathy lyrics, catchy hooks ensnaring hearts and minds as they spiral through the dancefloor of their lives.

south africas escapism refuge returns to londons smokin sessions with the on the fence ep, following his previous effort for the label the highly acclaimed vol. 31. a-side and title track on the fence is an understated and subtle effort, carrying with it an introspective and moody set of harmonies and chord progressions. its a quietly uplifting start to the ep, and the tracks lead melody will remain stuck in your head for days. the b1, almost eight does things differently by incorporating elements of classic ruff sqwad-era grime with an updated and crisp set of modern day production techniques. the ep’s last track, dust, uses a deep and propulsive bass line, which is augmented by escapisms now signature use of fleeting vocal samples. its a powerful ending to a heavyweight and emotionally-charged ep from escapism refuge. escapism refuges previous efforts have gained impressive dj support from across the scene, from figures such as compa (deep medi), synkro, gilles peterson, lefto, joe kay (soulection), don letts, tim parker, n- type, phaeleh and many more.

creme organization returns in july with four searing electro cuts from dutchman ekman. mixing up west coast electro with tougher, more textured techno styles in recent releases for berceuse heroique and bedouin record, this artist is as much about the past as the future and proves that across this new and impressive set of tracks. doomsday argument is not as dark as you would expect form the name: its a lithe and slippery electro affair with crisp snares and gurgling bass all topped off by a freaky top line. the great filter mixes up distorted bass with rippling glass synths and sounds both spooky and cosmic, then post singularity day picks up the pace with a quick and urgent drexcyian style that is restless, dynamic and busy. last of all antifragile is a wild acid workout with rocking beats and ripping 303s that twitch every nerve in your body.

„umwelt’s 12inch “… city” from 1999 was one of the most impressive 12inches i had at that time and i played the shit out of it. it was dark and very emotional, it was abstract but also driving at the same time. this was 1999 though, before discogs and before facebook and all the other platforms people have now to do research on artists they like and follow their work. at that time it was the record shop – and that was it. nobody knew this guy though, and i didn’t get my hands on any of the following releases, so in my world there was no follow-up to this record ever and i thought it would remain a one-off gem in my record box. until by some coincident i recently discovered he was still around and had actually released numerous releases in the meantime. i was very excited and contacted him straight away and ended up booking him for krake festival in the same year. undoubtedly his set was one of the best of the whole festival! he took the roof off the place with his mix of raw electro, industrial and rave and everybody was talking about it afterwards, saying it was the highlight of the festival! talking to him i learnt, that most of the tracks he played were his own, mostly unreleased. he produces without computers, all his tracks are single takes, there is no editing, no mixing afterwards, he only has a stereo track recording which is what it is. he owns a cutting machine which he uses to cut dubplates from his tracks, which he then plays out during his sets. this whole information about this very unique artistic approach just killed it for me, and since working with him was so nice as well, i asked him for a demo for killekill and its labels and was hoping for tracks i could make a great 12&#8243,, of. i got 14 tracks and after weeks of trying to pick the best, i finally realized i held one of the best electro albums ever in my hand – banging beats and the balls to go big and epic, subtle melodies, drama, funk – this album has got it all, and what’s most important, the music on it is the exact opposite of so much other music nowadays: it is emotional, it tells a story, it is easily recognizable and it is not interchangeable. it’s just umwelt.“ nico deuster

following the success of ‘ride’ with miss kittin, eminent sci+tec founder dubfire returns with another chaos-conjuring techno composition. previously the sole-preserve of his epic sense-blurring hybrid show, dubfire is finally unleashing ‘dust devil’… his first solo release in several years, ‘dust devil’ is all about precision momentum. a move that dubfire’s made his signature, you can physically feel movement and destination throughout. especially as we reach the short breakdown where the riff revolves faster and higher, providing space for the echoed stabs that whirl and twist around you intensely. as the drums re-ignite, the riff is suddenly converted into groove energy as the jack-minded persistence brings the elements back together with pure focus. this is what ali has to say… “this was an instrumental i had done that i wasn’t quite sure what to do with. it wasn’t strong enough for a lead single and it always felt as though there was something missing, perhaps a spoken or sung vocal. so i sort of put it out of my mind until it was time to compile the music for the hybrid show back in the summer of 2013. once i had the backbone of the set list, along with the visual look, there seemed to be a more defined mood and look. and when i happened upon this track again it seemed to have been tailor-made for this show. it was also nice to insert something no one had heard before to break things up a bit.

the silverlining dubs series marches on with this set of three rare remixes by the south londoner. the a-side features silverlining s outright monster of a dub of the inhabitants -the truth and a lie- with jayson walker of vocals, followed by the warm baseline heavy groove of g-spot by tokyo s dog with the groove lights and on the flip, a whole side dedicated to his highly sought-after remix of the mingers. together this cooks up one swirling broth of straight up underground house music with sprinklings, in equal measures, of intellect and party spirit!

sharif laffrey is one of the great unsung heroes of detroit s dance music scene, having been instrumental in putting on parties in the motor city for many years and spinning records in all kinds of legendary spots. when he s not busy promoting, laffrey also finds time to turn out productions under aliases such as quadrant and maersk. primarily though, his recent work has been under his own name for the likes of love on the rocks and discos capablanca, who he returns to here with a single sided sure shot entitled always. it s a heated, jacking club track that screams of laffrey s detroit roots, with an early house thrust and wild 80s-style sampling that will set the party alight.

moscow based multi-talent impish has been steadily honing his skills since 2013 working through labels such as program, fokuz recordings and his own fast rising occulti music imprint. it s that last label that saw him release the critically acclaimed silence lp back in 2016. fast forward to the summer of 2017 and a new album project the hush lp is set for release through all quality physical electronic music outlets around the world.
being the perfectionist that he is impish continues to impress working on crystal clear music productions where impeccable drumwork is combined with organic touches and progressions. this album sampler which features the two tracks can’t feel and that’s right is no different: it’s written on the fine line where driving beats for the dance floor meet harmonies for the mind and soul.

damon yates, aka martianman, set up 4th planet recordings to release music by people which includes some of his more favorite artists. artist that simply need to have more music released. it involves the same basic idea that he had when starting up the martianman volumes which is to release original, high quality jungle with a completely underground feel. not only the bass and drums are important for the vibes but the whole feel of the music is in play. it can be completely futuristic sounding or full of old school vibes though out. however it’s served up just know that it is underground.

london’s ghost writerz are back with a banger! following a slew of releases on tru thoughts and a recent mixtape -welcome to ghost town- heating up the streets, jimmy screech and sleepy time ghost return with a big splash on nice up! records. based around a familiar reggae riddim, the track tells the tale of jimmy’s foundation in soundsystem culture, starting in the 80s and name-checking legends such as shabba ranks, yellowman, smiley culture along the way. as the riddim flips we shift forward a generation, 90s dancehall and rap dominate, giving props to hip hop royalty such as busta rhymes and 2pac, then finally firing off a huge jungle climax, dripping in enough amen breaks to set the dancefloor alight whilst giving a little history of the musical heritage behind ghost writerz.

with releases from lerosa, andy mac and piezo already under our belts, idle hands strides towards the summer with a transmission from a kindred spirit across the pond. area, sometimes known as m50, has been flying the flag for forward thinking electronic music in chicago for a long time. his radio shows on wnur have a distinctive quality one step to the side of the music his hometown is best known for, while his label kimochi sound has released incredible music from the likes of benjamin brunn, strategy and many more besides. as a producer area has been equally prolific since first emerging in 2007. from ethereal sound and steadfast to untilmyheartstops and sequencias, his various approaches to rhythm and texture are all bound together by a meditative quality that feels like a perfect fit for idle. on this single, both sides of the 12- continue the theme of dusty, dusky 4/4 area is most widely known for, locking on to a house groove while sporting the abstract atmosphere of techno. -rlgl- is an understated, emotional heater that uses looped up fragments as a counterpoint to the more lilting strings and static that bed the track. notice takes a more overtly melancholic approach with its lingering, heavily processed keys that drift in between a tough set of drums. theres a punch to the track that will translate beautifully to a big system, even as the melodics spell out a more intimate listening experience.

dark entries present -a tape-, a double lpof early work by helena hauff, a dj and record producer based in hamburg, germany. at university she studied fine art, physics, and systematic music science. she previously was a resident at hamburg s golden pudel club, where she hosted a night called birds and other instruments. as a selector she weaves energetically between electro, new wave, and ebm. her music, often recorded live in one take, has a raw intensity to it. she debuted with an ep on werkdiscs back in 2013 followed by records for lux_rec and bunker sublabel panzerkreuz as well as two collaborative eps for pan, produced under the name black sites with fellow pudel resident f#x. ‘a tape’ is a compilation of helena’s earliest recordings from 2011 and 2014, originally released on limited cassette by handmade birds in 2015. clocking in at over 50 minutes, this collection spans hauff’s musical universe, from jacking acid-techno to krautish zone-outs and scuzzy feedback interludes. it’s tempting to consider it helena’s debut album, but she views these tracks as mostly forgotten sketches left on the cutting room floor. it a gripping collection of deep, sinister analog synth sequences, industrial dissonance, and heavy percussion. her equipment set up was a roland alpha juno 2, juno 60, tb-303, tr-707 and tr-808. both of the discs end with hauff stepping outside of the intentionally stiff, robotic rhythms, instead showing her skill at crafting less conventional electronic sounds. all songs have been mastered by james plotkin with vinyl eq and lacquer cut by george horn at fantasy studios in berkeley. the record is housed in a custom made jacket designed by eloise leigh, featuring a checkered graphic and black lines, highlighted by yellow and green for maximum visual tension. each copy includes a double-sided postcard with notes.

uffe is back with a two tracker that will set your pants on fire. the a side is a fresh take on pharaoh sanders 1974 cult classic love is everywhere an eleven-minute journey through broken piano melodies, layered vocals, partytime cowbell rhythms and heavy sub. the b side rytme version unfolds over eight minutes and is a dubbed out instrumental bomb of claps, hypnotic cowbells and added synth chords further building the suspense. peak time alert!

multi culti s lucid-lifestyle dreamer peter power takes us on a free-wheeling trip to the motherland on afro damba. the irish-born voodoohop resident has returned from the jungles of bahia with a fresh ep of primal party tracks sampling voices and rhythms from across africa and it s neighbouring islands, producing what is easily his most club-oriented work to date. whereas his tracks for voodoohop were spiritual flute-heart-openers, these are neo-pagan mating-ritual floor-fillers. the rhythm is set to tribal chug, with rollicking percussion, reverb-soaked vocals, and all the fun jangly bells & bits you expect to be hanging off such a well-traveled producer. if that weren t enough, we enlisted romanian-dance-duo khidja to rework adama waro resident mix-lord dreems also weighs in with a subtle remix of dansakoni, gently upping the tempo and tweaking the knobs in selfless service of the original groove.

during the mid-1970s, the aggrovators could do no wrong. this ace team of session musicians that was forged as an off-shoot of the soul syndicate were responsible for some of the biggest hits of the decade, recorded with bunny lees rising stars, such as johnnie clarke and his rival, cornell campbell. following on from the great shalom dub set of 1975, rasta dub 76 is another truly magnificent dub set culled from aggrovators hits (by johnny clarke, cornell campbell and others), this time, the entire album was given a scintillating mix-down at king tubbys studio by the great prince jammy, and the sonic excellence has stood the test of time. another must-have for all connoisseurs of dub.

born roy samuel reid in saint thomas in 1944, i roy was one of jamaicas all-time greatest deejays. a natural-born toaster, his rhyming raps always sounded effortless, whether describing the harsh realities of the inner city, or making light of nonsense nursery rhymes. a former employee at customs and excise, he was first active on a sound system called soul bunnies in the rock steady era, moving to son’s junior in 1968, and later, to the legendary supreme ruler of sound, defecting to the rival stereo sound system after that. hits for harry mudie and other producers soon followed, and after the killer debut album presenting i roy impacted overseas, the toaster began spending frequent periods in london. his longstanding working relationship with hit-making producer bunny lee led to some of his most noteworthy albums during the mid 1970s, the 1977 set cant conquer rasta is a superb showcase-style album, on which the toaster blows hard lyrics over five of lees killer rockers rhythms (recorded with the likes of johnny clarke), each complete with a corresponding aggrovators dub on the flip, all mixed by prince jammy at king tubbys studio

the next set of the japanese musical tales on hhatri s imprint comes from takecha (aka takeshi fukushima), a producer who has played a part in creating some of the seminal pieces of house music that have originated from japan. his music is characterised by the perfect marriage of experimentation and emotional content. for those that know, takecha s first ep kind of deep released on his own imprint, gwm records, in 1995 is a secret gem among japanese house music collectors. only 100 copies were ever available and it is a subtle reminder of what and how deep house should sound like. takecha provides no less in a tale of shiga four gorgeous tracks that provide some insight into his own creative, albeit humble genius in his approach to producing music. fresh off the press are three previously unreleased tracks with the addition of freak out. released in 1998. tip!

one of the sweetest and most idiosyncratic voices in reggae, tenor singer cornell campbell also has one of the longest-running careers of any jamaican recording artist. taken under studio one founder clement sir coxsone dodd’s wing at a very young age, cornell cut his first recordings in 1956, long before ska was even established. he remained based at studio one for many years (working as a label printer as well as a recording artist), and also voiced sides for king edwards in the ska years. he then briefly joined the sensations in rock steady and recorded at treasure isle, before moving back to studio one as leader of the eternals when reggae arrived, cutting huge hits there such as stars and queen of the mistrel, and giving early coaching to slim smith, jacob miller and bassist robbie shakespeare. joining forces with ace producer bunny striker lee in the mid-1970s brought a dramatic new surge in popularity that greatly boosted his profile overseas. the ropin lp was issued on third worlds justice subsidiary in 1980 a sub label set up to handle strikers product in the uk (though hits like mash you down and the title track had been handled in jamaica by joe gibbs). one of the albums outstanding moments is bandulu, an anti-rude boy epic voiced on the late night blues rhythm, while opening cover, just my imagination, has an uncredited toasting portion from errol scorcher.

22 years ago saw the release of goldie’s debut album ‘timeless’ which truly changed the face of drum’n’bass, hardcore and jungle. the seminal record featured the iconic track ‘inner city life’ - the vocals for which were performed by the late diane charlemagne. in 2011, the guardian described the release of ‘timeless’ as one of the -50 key events in the history of dance music-. mobo award-winning songwriter, dj, producer, visual artist and actor goldie (mbe) will release a new double album ‘the journey man’ on june 16th, all written and produced by goldie. collaborators on ‘the journey man’ album include vocalist and songwriter natalie duncan, terri walker, tyler lee daly, natalie williams, jose james, naomi pryor as well as goldie’s wife, mika wassenaar price. goldie is also one of only a handful of artists ever to co-write with david bowie – on the track ‘truth’ from the drum‘n’bass pioneer’s second album, ‘saturnz return’ released in 1998. the album also featured distinguished collaborators such as noel gallagher and krs-one. goldie will be performing an exclusive, sold-out set of shows at london’s esteemed venue ronnie scott’s on 24th and 25th of february, where he will be performing with the heritage ensemble along with ‘the journey man’ vocalists terri walker, tyler lee daly and natalie duncan.
